Background of the Study

Succession planning is a strategic approach to identifying and developing future leaders within an organization to ensure its sustainability and continuity. In the banking sector, where rapid changes in technology, regulation, and customer expectations are common, effective succession planning becomes even more crucial. United Bank for Africa (UBA), with its extensive network across Nigeria, is no exception. In Benue State, where UBA plays a significant role in the local economy, succession planning is vital for ensuring that the bank maintains a high level of service and operational efficiency even during leadership transitions.

Succession planning at UBA involves identifying potential leaders, nurturing their talents, and preparing them for future roles. This process helps prevent leadership gaps, reduces the risk of disruption, and ensures the bank's long-term sustainability. The importance of succession planning is especially pronounced in Benue State, where UBA’s operations are growing in line with the state’s economic development. As UBA continues to expand its customer base and services, there is a need for a clear strategy to develop a leadership pipeline that can adapt to the challenges of a rapidly evolving financial sector.

However, the process of succession planning is not without its challenges. It requires a deep understanding of the bank’s strategic objectives, the skills and competencies required for future leaders, and a long-term investment in talent management. In addition, the effectiveness of succession planning can be hindered by organizational culture, employee retention challenges, and the external environment. This study explores how UBA in Benue State approaches succession planning and its impact on organizational sustainability.

Statement of the Problem

While succession planning is widely recognized as a key factor for organizational sustainability, there is limited research on how it directly contributes to the long-term success of financial institutions in Nigeria, particularly in regional contexts like Benue State. UBA, like other banks in Nigeria, faces the challenge of identifying, developing, and retaining talent within its workforce to ensure leadership continuity. Without a structured and effective succession plan, the bank risks facing leadership vacuums, reduced employee morale, and disrupted services, which can negatively impact its sustainability and growth in Benue State.

Moreover, there is a lack of empirical evidence on the specific succession planning strategies employed by UBA and their effectiveness in ensuring the bank’s long-term viability. This research aims to bridge this gap by analyzing UBA's succession planning practices and their influence on organizational sustainability.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the effectiveness of UBA's succession planning strategies in ensuring organizational sustainability in Benue State.

2. To identify the challenges faced by UBA in implementing succession planning and its impact on organizational sustainability.

3. To provide recommendations for improving UBA's succession planning practices to enhance sustainability in the long term.

Research Questions

1. How effective is UBA’s succession planning in ensuring organizational sustainability in Benue State?

2. What challenges does UBA face in implementing succession planning for leadership continuity in Benue State?

3. How can UBA improve its succession planning strategies to enhance long-term sustainability in Benue State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Succession planning at UBA significantly contributes to organizational sustainability in Benue State.

2. There are significant challenges in implementing succession planning effectively at UBA in Benue State.

3. Improving succession planning at UBA will enhance its organizational sustainability in Benue State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on UBA’s succession planning processes in Benue State, examining its effectiveness in promoting organizational sustainability. Limitations include potential biases in responses from UBA employees, the availability of relevant data, and challenges in isolating succession planning as the sole factor contributing to sustainability.
